Yahya Sinwar: A Life Dedicated to the Liberation of Palestine
Yahya Sinwar, born on October 29, 1962, in the Khan Younis refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, was a towering figure in the Palestinian resistance movement. His family, displaced during the Nakba of 1948, found refuge in Gaza, a harsh environment that shaped Sinwar’s worldview from an early age. Raised in poverty and under the shadow of Israeli occupation, Sinwar grew up with a deep desire to liberate Palestine and restore dignity to his people. Sinwar became politically active during his time at the Islamic University of Gaza.
In 1987, as the First Intifada erupted, Sinwar co-founded Hamas, a movement that would become a driving force in the Palestinian resistance. He played a pivotal role in establishing al-Majd, Hamas’s internal security unit, which targeted Palestinian collaborators. This earned him a reputation as a firm and effective leader.
In 1989, Israeli authorities arrested Sinwar and sentenced him to life in prison for his role in the killing of collaborators. His 22 years of imprisonment would transform him into a symbol of resistance for Palestinians. While behind bars, Sinwar became a leader among Palestinian prisoners, orchestrating hunger strikes and protests. He also learned Hebrew, studying his captors’ language and society to better understand the adversary he had vowed to fight. His imprisonment made him a martyr-like figure, and his release became a rallying cry for many Palestinians.
In 2011, Sinwar was released as part of a prisoner swap deal in exchange for the captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. His release elevated him to a senior leadership role within Hamas, and by 2017, he was elected the group’s leader in Gaza. In this position, Sinwar managed both political and military strategies, consolidating his power and overseeing the group’s defiance against the Israeli blockade and military offensive
He played a key role in resisting the conflict with Israel, especially during intense military clashes in 2021 and the alleged deadliest-ever Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. This attack, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis, sent shockwaves through the region and made Sinwar one of Israel’s top targets.
On October 16, 2024, Yahya Sinwar was assassinated by Israeli airstrikes during Israel’s military campaign against Hamas in Gaza. Israeli forces claimed responsibility for the assassination, viewing it as a critical blow to Hamas leadership. Sinwar’s death has been described as a major loss to the Palestinian resistance, although the movement remains resilient.
Throughout his life, Yahya Sinwar remained unwavering in his commitment to the Palestinian cause. Despite his incarceration, his leadership flourished, and upon his release, he continued to fight for what he believed was the rightful liberation of his homeland. Sinwar’s passion for his people and his refusal to bow to Israeli pressure made him a revered leader among Palestinians. His leadership was driven by the belief that the occupation must end, and that Palestinians have the right to resist by any means necessary.
While Sinwar’s assassination marks the end of his life, the history of Gaza has shown that the occupation’s tyranny continually gives rise to new leaders. From the streets of Khan Younis to the halls of Hamas leadership, Sinwar embodied the spirit of resistance. His death, like those before him, will likely inspire the next generation of Palestinians to continue the struggle for freedom.
Gaza, under the siege and brutality of occupation, will always produce more leaders who rise to the challenge, driven by the same unrelenting hope that Yahya Sinwar held: the dream of a free and liberated Palestine. His legacy will remain in the hearts of those he led, and his efforts for Palestinian sovereignty will not be forgotten.
